The final character reference for Echo, including a few poses and expressions
When I started designing Echo, I drew 100 unique silhouettes to explore the many possibilities for her design
100 silhouettes cont'd
Next, I chose 5 of my favorite silhouettes and pushed them further, adding more personality and detail
Onward to color: I explored a few different color palettes using 3 of my 5 refined silhouettes
I built on my color explorations and silhouettes to develop 3 full-color options for Echo's final design
Once I chose my final design, I drew some rough turnaround sketches to get an idea of how she would look from different angles
My favorite part—the sketches! Echo is a nervous, friendly, and expressive character, so I drew lots of sketches to imagine her various moods
Sketches, part 2: exploring the many situations that my curious character finds herself in
My original character, Echo, is a forest monster who disguises herself as a human in the hopes of befriending the nearby villagers. In order to convince them of her good intentions, she works to turn an abandoned mansion into a forest hotel where monsters and humans can live in harmony. All illustrations were drawn digitally in Photoshop.
