Exploring the idea through concept sketches: I wanted the weapon to have a life of its own, like a combination of a prop and a character
A couple scenes from The Girl From the Other Side by Nagabe, the manga series that inspired the aesthetic of this piece
The most complex part of this model is the wings/blades—with the help of the quad draw tool in Maya, I carefully defined them to create the perfect shape
I used smart materials in Substance Painter to create the base for my textures, then went in with watercolor and pencil brushes to give the model the manga-inspired look I was going for
My favorite part—the eye! I used a combination of watercolor and marker brushes for these textures, painting with bright colors to make it pop
Renders from various perspectives (greyscale)

Texture maps for eyes and darker parts of metal
Texture maps for lighter metal details and eyelids
For this project, my goal was to design and model a unique fantasy weapon with hand-painted textures. I drew inspiration from manga and anime weapons for this design, further emphasizing the manga-inspired style by creating contrast in my textures through texturing. I was especially inspired by the manga series, The Girl From the Other Side by Nagabe—I love the whimsical, eerie style of the artwork and wanted my project to have a similar effect. I created the model in Maya, textured in Substance 3D Painter, and rendered in Marmoset. (knot model was created by hasp on Sketchfab: https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/)
